When I watched the games I wondered how the players communicate with both the referee and the opposing team. For example in the final game with Spain and the Netherlands. I would guess it might be difficult to find a referee who can speak both spanish and dutch, so what language would he speak?

i asked a similar question a few days ago and someone said it was English.
referees and linemen are required to speak english while at least one player in every team is fluent.
the others would just have to know words like Foul, Penalty, Hit, Hurt, Hand, Offside… so that the players know what the ref is talking about.
Also, i don’t know if you noticed that the awards and ceremony after the final match was all i English lol

FiFA is originally french but like in the Tour de France, the common language is english since fewer than half speak french in the competition.
FiFA has a set of handsigns that are very common in international AND local games.
Soccer is really not that complicated… when the whistle goes – u know there is a problem…

English. The referee is English. Most Dutch people can speak English. I don’t know about Spain. Never been there. I guess they can speak English as well. Some of the players played in England.
