There truly is no other sporting event that even comes close to the FIFA World Cup when it comes to excitement. Since the first tournament in 1930, FIFA’s organisation has grown increasingly fast in both popularity and honor.
A number of French Football admins, led by the mastermind, and innovator Jules Rimet, are the ones that we should all thank and respect, as they gave birth to the idea of bringing all the worlds best footballing nations together to play in one incredibly large tournament. The world cup’s original gold trophy was embedded with Jules Rimet’s name upon it, and it was won a grand total of three times before World War II put a stop to the competition.
When the world cup continued, it advanced quickly to its current undisputed status as the best single sporting event of the modern world.
After being held since 1958 in either Europe / America, the World Cup gained new ground with the Executive Committee’s decision in May 1996 to choose Korea and Japan as the co-hosts for the 2002 world cup tournament.
Despite the world cup tournament competition being fierce, extremely intense, and overly competitive – only 7 teams have managed to walk away with the glory of the world cup trophy. However, despite this, the World Cup has featured a number of dramatic upsets that have truly helped create a solid football history with many stories to tell. Some prime examples are the U.S beating England in 1950, North Korea’s win over Italy in 1966, and Cameroon’s opening match defeat against the Argentine title holders during 1990.
Nowadays, the FIFA World Cup boasts an enormous global audience, with over 37 billion recorded viewers watching the French World Cup tournament in 1998.
After many years of world class football, and so many changes to the tournament itself, the focus of the FIFA World Cup stays the same – the stunning golden trophy, which is featured on every footballer’s wishlist.
